Celtic’s run of eight wins in a row in all competitions since the winter break has coincided with the return to prominence of midfielder Olivier Ntcham.
Ntcham has started all eight of the games which the Hoops have played since January, and in that time he has scored three goals, and generally been excellent in the 3-5-2 system that Neil Lennon has chosen to play.
Ntcham is performing so well for Celtic that he is even keeping Ryan Christie, who for large spells of the season has arguably been the Hoops’ best player.
Thriving in current system
However, Ntcham is thriving in the Hoops’ new system, and as a result is one of the first names on Lennon’s team sheet.
Ntcham’s recent performances at Celtic deserve to be rewarded. After all, he has been at the heart of this winning streak.
What Celtic must do is offer the player a new contract. His current deal with the club expires in 2022. However, you have to think that due to his current run of form, clubs will be interested in signing Edouard in the summer transfer window.
Celtic can put an end to any interest – for a while anyway – by giving the player a new, improved contract. That would surely allow the player to concentrate on his football and forget about any distractions should he agree to a new deal.
However, there is no guarantee that Ntcham will agree to stay with the Hoops, even after this season.
Was keen to move on last summer
It was reported in the summer that the player was keen to leave Celtic to return to France, with Marseille mooted as an option.
“Celtic has given me a lot but leaving is the best solution for my development. If I went to Marseille, I would blossom, I have always signed for clubs with lots of fans” he said, as quoted by the Herald.
Of course, no more materialised and Ntcham stayed in Glasgow. Who is to say that he won’t feel that a move would benefit him again this summer though?
One way Celtic can ensure that doesn’t happen is by offering Ntcham a new deal. He has more than earned one after his recent performances.
