Our View: Reported Celtic call for reform is doomed unless clubs can agree

The Daily Mail is reporting that Celtic, and the rest of the Premiership clubs are unhappy with the disciplinary system that is used in the league.

The report discloses that the teams have invited SFA chief Ian Maxwell to a meeting on Monday where they will share their grievances.

Now, it is understandable that Celtic would not be happy with the disciplinary system. Especially after Ryan Christie’s three-game ban in January.

However, the report goes on to state that the clubs have not yet agreed to what will happen next, if the current system with the compliance officer is to be changed, for example.

Unless the clubs can agree on a common system, then the reform will be doomed to failure.

Agreement will be easier said than done

That will be easier said than done. Teams in Scotland’s top-flight rarely manage to agree on anything. However, if the clubs wants the disciplinary system changed, then there will have to be an agreement amongst the clubs.

Will that happen between now and the end of the season? That is doubtful, as there are only three months of the season remaining.

However, the fact that the SFA’s chief executive has been invited to a meeting by the clubs means that something could happen.

Hoops chief could make statement on matter

But, once more that could depend on how Maxwell reacts to the clubs. It will be interesting to see if Celtic chief Peter Lawwell has any statement to make on the matter.

That probably won’t happen though. What could be useful though, is if the clubs announce a joint statement expressing their unhappiness with the disciplinary process.

That could make clearer what they hope are the next steps in sorting out a problem which has seemed to upset almost every team in the Premiership this season.

Hopefully the system changes in time for next season. However, a common consensus has to be met between the clubs.
