Not that long ago, it seemed like Jonny Hayes didn’t have much of a future at Celtic. After recovering from a broken leg suffered in his first season at the club, he rarely featured in the first-half of last season.
However, after Christmas, firstly under Brendan Rodgers then Neil Lennon, he started to feature on a regular basis for the Hoops.
He ended up making 22 appearances for the Hoops last season, which is impressive when you consider that he hardly played in the first-half of the season.
This season, after a spell at the start of the season where he didn’t see much game time, he has played regularly for the Hoops.
Made plenty of appearances this season
That has usually meant coming off the bench, but he has still played most weeks for Celtic. So far, he has made 10 appearances, almost half of his entire total for last season.
Hayes, like a few Celtic players, is out of contract at the end of the season. However, his recent appearances point towards a new deal being awarded to the player.
Neil Lennon will like the player as he is able to play in a number of positions. In his career, he has played at both left and right-back, and as a left and right-winger.
Ability to play in various positions is always useful
That ability to adapt and play a few roles for a side is always useful to have. That is why Neil Lennon has been featuring Hayes so often.
Few players have the ability to play in so many positions as he does. Hayes seems to be satisfied at the Hoops. He might not be a regular starter, but he looks set to contribute this season.
With that being said, it would not be a surprise to see Hayes sign a new deal with the Hoops sooner rather than later. He could yet play a part in helping the Hoops to nine in a row.
