Celtic are interested in signing Bolton midfielder Luca Connell, according to a report.

The Scottish Sun has revealed that the Hoops are hoping to beat Premier League trio Wolves, Norwich and Sheffield United to the starlet.

The reports goes on to claim that both Southampton and Brighton had bids rejected for the player in January. Intriguingly, bitter rivals Rangers were linked with a move for the player last month.

Connell has only just broken into the Bolton side, making 12 appearances for the now League One side. However, his performances have been so impressive he has been rewarded with a call-up to the Republic of Ireland side.

The Hoops have plenty of midfielders in their squad at the moment. However, it seems obvious that if the player joined the Hoops he would be signing for the future, and not for now.

He would not be expected to break into the Celtic side right away. That would be putting too much pressure on the player.

Perhaps Neil Lennon feels that he can get the best from a player who is a defensive midfielder. After all, he played that role for many years and was hugely successful.

It will be interesting to know what the Hoops support feel about this potential deal. Connell looks to be a ‘project’ signing, a player for the future.

However, if he is as good as the Hoops think he is, the club should swoop to sign him. In a few years he could be one of the mainstays of the side.
