Reported return of Gary Hooper would be backwards step

According to a report, Gary Hooper could be making a return to Celtic. The Scottish Sun is reporting that if Neil Lennon is appointed as permanent Hoops boss, he would like to bring the striker back to Glasgow.

There is no doubt that in his time with the Hoops, Hooper was a very good striker. However, any return now would be a backwards step for the club.

Dreadful injury problems

The main reason not to make a move for Hooper is the dreadful injury problems he has had in recent years.

The hitman has rarely played in the last 18 months. He only made five appearances for Sheffield Wednesday this season after needing a groin operation.

It was a similar story the season before as he played 25 games but missed half of the season.

Best days may be behind him

With the constant injury problems, you have to worry that his best days are behind him. That could be why he was given a free transfer by Wednesday, which the player confirmed on Twitter.

If Hooper hadn’t had such injury issues you would imagine Sheffield Wednesday would have kept him at the club.

Perhaps the fact that Lennon knows the player well from his first spell in charge is why he would consider bringing Hooper back to the club.

But there has to be a question mark about his ability. It would be a backwards step bringing Hooper back to the club.
