Scott Bain’s perfect Celtic cup record has been defined by patience and concentration

Scott Bain could well start for Celtic against Aberdeen on Sunday, after taking the place of Vasilis Barkas for the last two fixtures.

Should Bain return to the team, then he will be putting his remarkable domestic cup winning streak on the line. So far in his Celtic career, Bain has played in 10 domestic cup fixtures for the Hoops. Celtic have won the lot of them.

Played in cup when he wasn’t a first-team regular

Okay, those fixtures have come in the middle of an unprecedented run of Celtic success. However, for much of that run, Bain was not a Celtic first-team regular. During the Betfred Cup run of 2018-19, Bain was second choice Celtic goalkeeper, and Craig Gordon was first choice. He had to show patience to wait for that first-team chance, and he did well when called upon.

The same is true when it comes to the Scottish Cup, which began last season and is now continuing this season. Bain was second choice to Fraser Forster when he played against Clyde. Okay, that might not be much of a test, but Bain still had to show concentration skills when playing in the game.

He wouldn’t have wanted to be the player that contributed to the end of Celtic’s domestic cup winning run. Thankfully that hasn’t happened yet, and Bain has yet to lose a domestic cup tie for the team.

Should Bain play against Aberdeen on Sunday, it will be the third time he will have come up against Derek McInnes’ side during his unbeaten run. Impressively, he has not conceded a goal in either meeting so far. Those games were in a cup final and a semi-final.

Knows how to handle big occasions

That shows that Bain knows how to handle the big occasions. He also played in the Scottish Cup Final in 2019 against Hearts, a game which saw Celtic’s ‘treble treble’ ambitions on the line.

Bain might not have kept a clean sheet that day, but he was given the nod to start by Neil Lennon as the Hoops won the treble again.

Should Bain start against Aberdeen, Neil Lennon will have no concerns about Bain’s participation in the game. After all, he’s already proved just how well he performs in cup competitions.

In other news, Chris Sutton would start Odsonne Edouard against Aberdeen.
