We look at back at Celtic’s performers in the 2018/19 season, with a look at Celtic number 73 Mikey Johnston’s season.

Mikey Johnston may have recently changed his strip number, but last season he was number 73, and that is what we are examining.

It was a season to remember for the Celtic winger. He featured fairly regularly for the first-team, starting in the Scottish Cup Final win over Hearts.

Did well as emergency striker

He ended the season with five goals in 23 games, which is good return. During the middle of a striking crisis, he played as an emergency striker, and did well against the likes of Motherwell and Dundee.

Johnston also played as a striker against Rangers at Ibrox. He had a poor game, but so did the entire team that day. Johnston managed to put that behind him to win back his place in the team under Neil Lennon. For that, he deserves plenty of credit.

Manager wants to see more from player

Interestingly enough, even though he started the player at Ibrox and Hampden, Neil Lennon wants to see more from the player.

Lennon recently revealed that he wants to see the player get ‘fitter’ for next season. If Johnston pays heed to the manager’s words, it could be an excellent season for the attacker.

Celtic have plenty of attacking players in their squad. Johnston has to stand-out to make sure that he can hold down a place in the side.

If he can do that, he could feature regularly for the Hoops next season.
