Celtic may be tempted by the availability of Adam Matthews this summer. The defender, who’s now 27, is likely to be released by Sunderland, according to the Sun.

The Welsh international is out of contract at the Stadium of Light this summer and hasn’t yet signed an extension. His future is likely to be elsewhere given his reported hefty wages and Sunderland’s status as a League One club.
Matthews has featured precious little for the Black Cats since the turn of the year but could be about to find a new home.

A Celtic return?
Matthews was signed by current Hoops boss Neil Lennon back in 2011. The full-back joined on a pre-contract and went on to have four pretty good years at the club. He played 150 times for Celtic in total, netting five goals.
Our problems at right-back are well documented and Matthews’ potential free agent status may alert the club. However, it’s important we weigh up any move carefully.

The Welshman left Celtic back in 2011 because he couldn’t get in the team. Mikael Lustig had nailed down the right-back slot and Matthews was consigned mainly to the bench, so what has changed? Lustig may be coming to the twilight of his career but Matthews hasn’t exactly gone from strength to strength in the past four years.
The defender has struggled to get himself into a pretty mediocre Sunderland side that missed out on promotion from England’s third tier this season. We must be aiming to do better than him this summer.
