Sky Sports Celtic snubs will have supporters thinking twice about subscription

The Celtic supporters have every right to be absolutely livid with yet another away-day snub from Sky Sports this week.

Come full-time on Wednesday night, the SPFL’s sole live broadcaster will have refused to have screened 3 of our previous 4 away matches. And we’re not just talking about any away games either.

Sky Sports have decided to omit games such as Livingston vs Celtic and Motherwell vs Celtic over the last month or so. This has led to Hoops fans, many of whom will already have committed to a Sky subscription, having to fork out an extra £12-£20 to watch their team play these one-off games.

It’s the same on Wednesday. Hibernian are charging £15 to watch the game on their PPV platform. Forgetting the fact that the coverage will be rightly biased towards the Easter Road club, this is yet more money out of Celtic fans’ pockets.

What makes you raise your eyebrow even higher is the fact that Sky aren’t even showing a single Premiership game on Wednesday. We have a packed card of games in Scotland that also includes the likes of Rangers vs Aberdeen and St Johnstone vs Hearts. All of them snubbed. Instead, Sky will be broadcasting Preston North End vs Liverpool on 3 different channels.

What are Celtic fans getting from the latest Sky Sports deal?

Last season, Sky Sports didn’t even fulfill their Scottish Premiership quota. They showed 41 of a possible 48 games across their platforms [The Scotsman]. That suggests the level of care they truly have for Scottish football.

Many Celtic fans would’ve subscribed to Sky Sports this season simply because it’s the only way to watch our away games live. Or so we thought. Sure, you can understand the idea of having to snub a game or so here and there. But we’re talking about 3 massive away fixtures over the last month alone. It’s brutal stuff.

Celtic will next be on Sky Sports on November 7th against Dundee at Dens Park. That’s less than a fortnight away. Our last screened Sky clash came at Pittodrie over 3 weeks ago. That means it’ll have been a full 5 weeks between the 2 fixtures.

Fans are entitled to be re-evaluating what it is they’re truly getting from this deal between the SPFL and Sky. It’s hardly value for money at the moment.

And supporters have been left fuming with the latest snub as the TV broadcaster has decided to omit one of our biggest games of the season from their schedule:
