One of Celtic’s cult heroes of the past 20 years is undeniably former Hoops goalkeeper Artur Boruc. The Celtic Twitter account paid tribute to the player on Thursday by revealed that it was the 14th anniversary of the player signing a permanent contract with the Hoops.

He had originally signed on loan, but was quickly snapped up after an excellent start to his Hoops career.

The Hoops Twitter account that asked fans to provide their favourite memory of the Polish goalkeeper. Many were happy to oblige.

One fan even went as far as to claim that Boruc was the ‘best ever Celtic goalkeeper’. Others pointed to memorable penalty saves or performances in league winning matches.

Here are some of the best reactions from social media as fans remembered Boruc:

Some moments seem to stick out for the Celtic support. One is certainly the penalty save from Louis Saha in a Champions League match against Manchester United in 2006.

The Hoops scored the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win thanks to a trademark Shunsuke Nakamura free-kick. However, the team were indebted to Boruc for a late penalty save which secured the win.

Another memorable Boruc moment was when he scored a penalty in a marathon shoot-out against Dundee United. The Hoops eventually prevailed 11-10 on penalties.

Provided a stability in goals

Boruc might not have been at Celtic for that long. He was only at the club for five years, before moving to Fiorentina. However, he has to go down as one of Celtic’s best goalkeepers in a long time. He provided a stability in the position that the Hoops had previously been lacking.

Since Boruc’s departure, only Fraser Forster has shown as much consistency as Boruc did in his time at the club. That is a testament to how good a player Boruc was. He deserves to be remembered as a Hoops cult hero.
