Celtic’s recent announcement that Scott Bain had signed a new contract with the club has come out of the blue. There was no real indication that the player, who has not featured for the Hoops since August, was going to agree a new deal.
However, Celtic and the player have come to terms on a deal, and the goalkeeper’s deal at the club runs until 2023.
A dependable goalkeeper
That is good news for the player, who has proved to be a dependable goalkeeper for the most part since joining the Hoops.
However, there is an aspect of Bain’s new deal that might be a concern for the Hoops support. That is, how will it play into the future of current Hoops number one Fraser Forster?
Forster’s loan deal at Celtic expires at the end of the season. So good have his performances been for the Hoops that Southampton might well be keen on giving him another chance in goal next season.
Fans will want goalkeeper to return next season
The majority of Celtic fans will not want that to happen. They will want the player to sign a long-term deal with the Hoops.
However, that might not be possible, which is why Bain has been given a new, improved contract by the club. Towards the end of the season we might get more clarity about the future of Forster at Celtic.
Someone at Southampton will undoubtedly comment on the situation. Hopefully those comments will give Celtic encouragement about making a move for the player on a permanent basis.
At least for next season and going forward, the Hoops support know that Bain will be at the club. It is highly unlikely that Craig Gordon will still be at the club.
As for Fraser Forster, only time will tell. But it would be a bonus for the Hoops if he can return to Celtic Park next season.
