The controversial Celtic call Ange got bang on last night

When Ange Postecoglou named his team for last night, Celtic fans were quite understandably confused by a severe lack of Tom Rogic.

In fact, on social media at least, it was the main topic of conversation. Rogic has re-emerged as such a fan favourite that the two full-backs in the wings garnered very little reaction. That’s because Rogic, as he’s proven time and again this season, can win us matches.

Against Dundee United, he was incredible. Ditto Motherwell at the weekend, when his strike separated the sides. But perhaps his most telling interventions have been when he’s not even started matches.

It was certainly the case last night. Ange knew he had to have something in reserve, even with a litany of attacking talent ruled out through injury. On paper, starting Rogic might’ve been the more understandable call, but leaving such a talented player on the bench probably won us the game.

Look back at out win at Pittodrie. With another late winner needed, Rogic entered the field of play, disrupted Aberdeen to no end, and helped to set up Jota’s winner. His impact was huge.

And now, back to last night. Celtic needed inspiration, and so who did Ange turn to? Tom Rogic.

Ange Postecoglou gets best out of Celtic star Tom Rogic

It’s worth remembering that barely a few weeks ago, Tom Rogic was injured. Such is the demand on the Celtic players that many of those who were playing had endured some kind of spell out of the team this season.

So, it’s very possible that Rogic still isn’t 100% fit. In fact, it’s likely. But that doesn’t go all the way to explaining why the Aussie wasn’t starting last night.

It reads more as a tactical decision. With his technique, vision and ability to pick out a pass – as he did for Anthony Ralston late on last night – Rogic can be impactful at any time. Especially, though, when the game needs a moment of sheer inspiration.

His stats won’t leap off the page, but it’s worth noting just how progressive he was. In 15 minutes, Rogic picked out 10 accurate passes, with 10 out of 14 overall in the opposition half [Fotmob]. He was driving at Ross County, finding spaces others wouldn’t see, and there was more than a touch of excellence when he found Anthony Ralston in the box.

Leaving Rogic on the bench was a brave decision. Just as it was against Aberdeen at Pittodrie, when Celtic needed a late intervention to win the game.

But Ange Postecoglou got it absolutely correct.
