The parallels between Celtic target Auston Trusty and Carter-Vickers’ career trajectories

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers could be in the market for a central defender before the transfer deadline strikes one week today.

Yesterday, it became apparent that Sheffield United defender Auston Trusty is on the Bhoys’ radar. The United States international has been at Bramall Lane for a year after completing a £5 million move from Arsenal.

Trusty is a left-sided central defender who can also feature at left-back if needed, so you would assume he would compete with Liam Scales for a slot in the partnership with Cameron Carter-Vickers.

Mikey Johnston could also leave in the opposite direction for Sheffield United, creating the potential for mutually beneficial transfer business between both clubs.

When evaluating the Media-born man, you can’t help but notice a few coincidences when comparing his career trajectory to Carter-Vickers.

Trusty and Carter-Vickers’ career path similarities

Carter-Vickers arrived at Celtic from Tottenham Hotspur in 2021, looking to find a permanent home after no fewer than six loan spells at Sheffield United, Ipswich Town, Swansea City, Stoke City, Luton Town and Bournemouth.

Admittedly, Trusty only has two loan stints, one back at Colorado Rapids and the other at Birmingham City, before his move to the Blades, which was pushed through last year, but there is a theme to take from this.

Both have spent time at two sizeable Premier League clubs in Arsenal and Tottenham, even if they weren’t rewarded with a fighting chance at playing regular first-team football.

Seeking regular minutes, both departed and have tried to make their name elsewhere while sharing the same nationality and position. Therefore, they are also vying against each other for a call-up to the United States national team.

It seems a little poetic that if a deal goes through, both players could now have a platform to play alongside each other at Celtic, staking their claim together and forming a partnership over the coming years.

There may not be much to dissect here, though you can see what I am getting at. There is value to be had by shopping in the English market, and it is worth pointing out any similarities to get a better handle on the profile of player Celtic are most likely to make the plunge for.
