Celtic’s reported interest in Cole Campbell has understandably focused on his talent, but the most revealing thing about the Borussia Dortmund youngster is not a statistic or highlight reel.
It is the mentality he displayed after already making his Bundesliga and Champions League debuts.
Celtic should note what Campbell had already achieved
Campbell had already made his Bundesliga and Champions League debuts when he discussed his ambitions in a 2024 interview.
That context matters. Many teenagers speak about future goals before they have proven themselves at senior level.
Campbell was reflecting on achievements he had already earned through Borussia Dortmund’s pathway.
By that stage, he had reached two major career targets and was already looking beyond them.
What impresses you most about Cole Campbell?
Celtic fans will appreciate the honesty of Campbell’s ambition
The most striking part of the interview was the complete absence of limits in his thinking.
Most young players speak about earning minutes or establishing themselves at senior level. Campbell’s answer was very different.
As told by the Daily Record, Campbell said: “My goal was to debut in the Bundesliga and eventually the Champions League. Now that I’ve done that, I’m just trying to work hard and obviously earn more minutes throughout the rest of the season.
“That’s my short-term goal. As for long-term career goals, I want to win a Ballon d’Or. That’s something that I want to achieve. I want to win the Champions League and I want to win a World Cup as well.
“That’s something that would be absolutely amazing and I think it’s all possible in the future.”
Whether he reaches those heights is impossible to know. What is clear is that he is not lacking belief.
Celtic can see there is substance behind the confidence
Those comments would carry less weight if they were not backed up by performance.
Campbell scored six goals in 11 U17 Bundesliga appearances before adding eight goals in 22 U19 Bundesliga matches for Dortmund.
He also contributed two goals and an assist for Dortmund II as he continued his progression into senior football.
That record helps explain why Dortmund trusted him with first-team opportunities and why he has already accumulated Bundesliga experience.
Celtic should value mentality as much as talent
Campbell is now back at Borussia Dortmund following his loan spell at Hoffenheim, but the reported Celtic interest is easy to understand.
Talent opens doors. Mentality often determines how far a player ultimately goes.
Plenty of talented young players emerge every year. Far fewer publicly declare that they believe they can win football’s biggest individual prize. That confidence is what makes Campbell such an intriguing Celtic target.
