The verdict on Celtic man Anthony Ralston’s display against Hungary at EURO 2024

Celtic’s Anthony Ralston played 83 minutes for Scotland last night as they fell to elimination at EURO 2024 in disappointing fashion.

The 25-year-old started all three group matches at the tournament alongside Callum McGregor; meanwhile, James Forrest and Greg Taylor were unused substitutes against Germany, Switzerland and Hungary.

Unfortunately, Steve Clarke’s men failed to deliver last night against a stubborn outfit, barely fashioning an opening until stoppage time, leaving it to Rolland Sallai to deliver the decisive blow

Nevertheless, Celtic right-back Ralston showed up well against Marco Rossi’s outfit, so let’s take a look at how he fared during proceedings.

Anthony Ralston’s performance against Hungary

Ralston received some criticism for his role in Switzerland’s equaliser in Scotland’s 1-1 draw with Murat Yakin’s side last week; however, nobody can say the Celtic man didn’t leave it all on the pitch against Hungary.

Per Fotmob, he completed 23 out of his 29 attempted passes, with two reaching the final third. Moreover, Ralston swung over two accurate crosses and one pinpoint long ball, though it was his defensive exploits that deserved plaudits despite the result.

The statistical outlet show the Lennoxtown graduate won two duels, made three clearances and carried out one recovery amid the nature of an intense occasion. He also recorded one interception and seven ‘defensive actions’ before being replaced by Kenny McLean on the 83rd minute.

Evaluating his display, it is fair to say Ralston stood up and was counted for his nation, even if the result didn’t go the way he or his teammates desired.

Hopefully, the Hoops defender can enjoy some well-deserved rest ahead of preparations for another busy campaign at Parkhead.
