Three things we learned from Celtic’s emphatic win over Motherwell

Celtic made it two league wins out of two with an emphatic 5-2 win over Motherwell at Fir Park. Interestingly enough, Motherwell’s Liam Donnelly’s scored the first and last goals of the game, but in-between Celtic were in superb form. Goals from Kristoffer Ajer, Leigh Griffiths, James Forrest, Odsonne Edouard and Ryan Christie gave the Hoops the three points.

Here, we look at three things we learned in Celtic’s comfortable victory:

Leigh Griffiths only played for 61 minutes against Motherwell. But he managed to make a big impression in that time on the park. He scored a fine free-kick to put the Hoops 2-1 ahead in the game. That is three goals he has scored since returning to the side. Neil Lennon must be tempted to start the player against Cluj on Tuesday. He looks more than capable of finding the back of the net.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR SHINES ONCE MORE

By his high standards James Forrest had a relatively quiet game. But he still managed to have a big impact on proceedings. His superb through ball set up Kristoffer Ajer to score the equaliser. He then put the Hoops 3-1 up with a deft finish. Already Forrest has shown that he is going to be one of Celtic’s key men this season. If he keeps up this form a second player of the year award in a row could be his for the taking.

What is there left to say about Kristoffer Ajer? Once more he turned in a great performance for the Hoops, this time at right-back. Not only was he playing in an unfamiliar position, but he scored a great equalising goal for Celtic to level the game at 1-1. That gave the Hoops a platform to build on to win the game. Ajer has shown in the past week that he is comfortable playing in two defensive positions. That is a quality that sides would love to have.
