Time is up for Tom Rogic as Celtic consider summer rebuild

Celtic carry a plethora of players who may seek new challenges elsewhere come the summer.

Someone who nearly departed from Celtic Park in recent times is attacking midfielder Tom Rogic. The Australian international was on the verge of a £4 million move to an unnamed Qatari club last August before the transfer collapsed [The Scottish Sun].

Staying put in Glasgow, the cultured midfielder has endured a frustrating campaign. His creative influence on proceedings has waned considerably. Making 30 appearances for Celtic in 2020/21, he has only mustered two goals and five assists [Transfermarkt].

Rogic has been a brilliant player over the years for the Celts, however, his game-time has come predominantly from the bench. He has started 14 fixtures this season, whereas he has featured off the bench on 16 occasions [Transfermarkt].

Rogic is an extremely talented player, however his fitness leaves a lot to be desired

Despite showing his class in flashes, such as scoring against AC Milan in the San Siro [WWOS], concerns over his fitness have reared their head once again. He has made 89 outings for Celtic in the last three seasons, averaging out to just under 30 matches played per calendar year [Transfermarkt]. With two years left on his deal [Transfermarkt] the Hoops should look to cash in and add some extra funds to the transfer coffers.

At 28-years-old, Celtic would be able to command a relatively decent fee for the fan favourite. The Celts should fully prioritise the development of David Turnbull. The 21-year-old has the third-highest key pass rate in Europe and is already impressing in other areas of his game.

There’s no doubt Rogic retains phenomenal command of the football and the ability to produce individual brilliance. Nevertheless, sometimes players need a change in order to thrive in the long term. His time at the Hoops has gone stale, Celtic should look to sell him on as they rebuild for 2021/22.
