Things may be about to change for Celtic in the striking department. Not only has Neil Lennon all but got his man in the shape of Polish forward Patryk Klimala, but there are also moves being made for another frontman – albeit on a pre-contract.
As Sky Sports News reported earlier, we are in a “head to head” battle with Rangers for Stoke City’s Tyrese Campbell. The 20-year-old is out of contract in the summer and able to talk to clubs this month with a future move on mind.
Although Sky do mention the possibility of Campbell being loaned out this month, it does seem more likely that it’s next season Celtic have in mind with their interest. And that opens up an intriguing debate over our striking options for season 2020/2021.
At the moment, we have Odsonne Edouard, Leigh Griffiths, Vakoun Bayo and Jonathan Afolabi as striking options at the club. Klimala will make that five when he secures his imminent move from Jagiellonia and Campbell would be a sixth if he were to join.
Given that Lennon has mainly chosen to go with one up top in his second stint as Hoops boss thus far, that doesn’t leave too much room for six forwards. Some will have to move on.
Campbell interest shows Celtic are planning for next season already
The club won’t actively look to sell Odsonne Edouard but he will come under severe interest in the summer. Jonathan Afolabi is highly unlikely to be sold permanently but a loan move could beckon.
But with Klimala soon to sign and the club actively looking for Campbell or one other, the writing could be on the wall for either Griffiths or Bayo.
Neither have covered themselves in glory so far this season. Bayo has registered one goal from his two starts and ten substitute appearances while Griffiths has three goals from five and 13 respectively. (fitbastats.com)
Lennon has given both chances to impress and neither have really forced their way into the team. Now that Klimala is on board you would imagine that both could have their work cut out even making it onto the bench for future matches.
And yet Lennon wants to add more forwards in the summer. If that doesn’t paint a bleak picture for Griffiths and Bayo then I don’t know what does.
