Celtic’s Vakoun Issouf Bayo has been very unfortunate when it comes to the Europa League group stages this season.
He has featured in only one of Celtic’s five games so far, and found himself harshly sent-off in the 1-1 draw with Rennes after a challenge on goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. Since then, the Hoops have won four group games in a row – and Bayo hasn’t featured in any of them.
However, it looks as if the player’s luck in the competition may be about to change. Neil Lennon has confirmed that the player will be involved at some stage of the game against Cluj on Thursday night.
“Will be involved”
“Vakoun Bayo will be involved in Cluj” Lennon said, as reported by the Scottish Sun. This rare chance for Bayo could be coming at just the right time.
The reason for that – the role of Celtic’s number two striker still seems to be up for grabs. There is no doubt that Odsonne Edouard is Celtic’s undisputed number one striker.
However, there is still a doubt about how the second choice is. In Edouard’s recent absence, Lewis Morgan has filled in at striker. Leigh Griffiths didn’t even make the squad for the Betfred Cup Final. Therefore, Bayo still has a chance to impress Neil Lennon.
Which striker will start game?
It will be interesting to see which of Bayo or Griffiths get the nod to start the game. Perhaps Neil Lennon will give the duo 45 minutes each. A half for each of the pair. Neither player has started for Celtic for a while, so it will be a good test for the duo.
Bayo will be hoping to end what for him has been a disappointing group stage on a high note. It started with a red card, but perhaps it will end with a goal, and a winning one at that. That would be a fitting way for this successful campaign to end, with another Celtic win.
