What Celtic did with Cameron Carter-Vickers in 2021 transfer window proves fans don’t need to panic

Right now, it feels like the world is crumbling all around Celtic.

Seven new faces have joined Celtic this summer, including a homecoming for Kieran Tierney and the shrewd pick-up of Benjamin Nygren.

There is no denying that Celtic’s shopping can’t end there and several more arrivals need to come but with the league season just over a week away and a Champions League qualifier around the corner, frustration is building.

Fans are already fearing the worst, slamming the board for selling Brendan Rodgers short and not backing him in the window.

However, we’ve been here before and that’s why there’s no need to panic.

Some of Celtic’s best signings have come late in the transfer window

The transfer window is never easy to navigate and for clubs like Celtic, you can’t afford to get things wrong.

Price tags are high and you never want to overspend and in the past, the Hoops have been hailed for buying talent cheaply.

Crucially, most of those have come late in the transfer window. In the 2021/22 season, Cameron Carter-Vickers was signed on deadline day and is now easily Celtic’s best centre-back since Virgil van Dijk.

Matt O’Riley and Jota were also late arrivals and even as last season, Luke McCowan and Arne Engels arrived on the last day of the transfer window.

Sure, you want these players to come in earlier to gel quicker but it’s worth remembering that we’ve been here before and that it has worked out.

Celtic’s best deadline day transfers

As well as the names above, there have been a number of other success stories for players.

Craig Bellamy’s loan move in January 2005 saw the Welshman hit the ground running, including a stunning strike against Rangers in the Glasgow derby.

Leigh Griffiths from Wolverhampton Wanderers to Celtic in January 2014 was also a success story as the forward became an elite talisman in front of goal for a number of years.

Other notable inclusions also feature the likes of Paul Hartley and Barry Robson too.
