James Milner’s retirement brings the curtain down on one of the most respected careers English football has seen.

Milner retires as one of the Premier League’s most decorated and durable players after a career spanning more than two decades.

Celtic left a lasting impression on James Milner through Andy Robertson

Milner’s connection to Celtic largely came through former Liverpool teammate Andy Robertson.

Few players are as passionate about the Hoops as Robertson, and it quickly became clear he was not shy about sharing that passion with those around him.

Speaking ahead of a charity match at Celtic Park, Milner admitted: “I feel I know Celtic well as Robbo never stops going on about them.”

He then added: “He never lets up about Celtic. I thought I was bad going on about Leeds, who are my team, but it’s Celtic, Celtic, Celtic non-stop with him.”

Perhaps the most telling comment came when Milner said: “I am well-drilled about Celtic, the club and its history.”

That stands out because it came from a player who spent more than two decades operating at the highest level of English football. Despite never playing in Scotland, Milner clearly recognised Celtic’s history, support and standing within the wider game.

He even acknowledged the attraction of Parkhead itself, saying: “Big names are delighted at the prospect of coming to Paradise, as Robbo insists I call it.”

Celtic hero Martin O’Neill earned James Milner’s utmost respect

Milner’s appreciation of Celtic was also shaped by one of the club’s greatest modern managers.

When reflecting on Martin O’Neill’s influence on his career, the veteran midfielder did not hold back.

Milner said: “Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. Funny man. Great storyteller.”

He also explained: “Yeah, I loved playing for Martin. He was so good for me and gave me that confidence and pushed me into the middle of the park, and I loved playing for Martin.”

Celtic supporters hardly need reminding of O’Neill’s qualities. His success at Parkhead secured his place among the club’s most influential figures.

Milner worked under elite managers throughout his career, yet O’Neill remains one of the figures he speaks about most fondly. That alone tells Celtic supporters everything they need to know.

Milner’s retirement has understandably prompted reflection on a remarkable career. Celtic was never part of that journey, but his own words showed he understood exactly why the club continues to command such respect throughout football.
