Celtic could be about to confirm the departure of Patryk Klimala, and if that’s the case, it must also lead them into a major rethink on Leigh Griffiths.
The Daily Record has reported that Klimala is closing in on a switch to the New York Red Bulls. Impressively, we could be about to rake in as much as the £3.5million we dished out on him.
It would appear to be a good move at face value. The Celtic supporters are generally pleased with the potential fee we could rake in. It’s not bad going for a player who only has three goals in 28 appearances and had been nowhere near our first-choice.
For many, it will symbolise the start of the club’s huge rebuilding job in the summer. Klimala perhaps could’ve shone under a new boss, but a decision looks like it’s been made to shift him out the door.
There was also another report from the Daily Record last night claiming that Aberdeen were not interested in Leigh Griffiths. They reported that the seven-year Celtic star would most likely join Hibs if he were to leave Glasgow this season.
Whilst that would appear to be a good move for the striker, things have now changed. Celtic, assuming the Klimala deal is confirmed, will have gotten rid of one striker.
Celtic shouldn’t make clearout decisions before a new manager arrives; Leigh Griffiths decision must be his
Odsonne Edouard, who’s entering the final 12 months of his contract, is also almost certain to depart. Let’s not pretend we have any chance of him signing an extended contract. He’ll surely have eyes on bigger fish at this stage.
When Edouard goes, we’ll be two centre-forwards down. Allowing Griffiths to then leave would mean that we only have Albian Ajeti on the books as a senior striker. It’s not as if he’s impressed this season either.
Yes, there’s a rebuild on our hands this summer, but there’s no point in having a clearout before the new manager arrives. it’s dangerous to only have one centre-forward on our books for a new boss coming in.
Griffiths is set to have talks with Celtic before the end of the season as the club contemplates taking up the final year in his contract [Celtic TV]. The Scottish Sun has reported that it could cost the Hoops around £1m to activate. Therefore, you could understand why some may be wary given he hasn’t exactly earned an extension.
But when Klimala and Edouard leave we would be in real danger of getting rid of all of our talent up top before the new boss has even had a look. There’s no point making the rebuild bigger than it needs to be. If the next manager sees something in Griffiths, as we’ve always maintained could be the case, then it should be his decision to keep him on.
It would’ve been different had Klimala stayed. Celtic could’ve had both he and Ajeti available and Griffiths could’ve left to help reduce the numbers a touch. But now? It’s too risky to let both depart before the new season. Especially without the new manager’s say-so.
