Reports have linked Jon McCracken with a move to Celtic Park this summer and while it may seem uninspiring at first, the move actually makes perfect sense.
Kasper Schmeichel’s career is effectively over due to his shoulder injury, leaving Viljami Sinisalo and Ross Doohan as the only options.
Sinisalo hasn’t put a foot wrong but needs extra competition and the Dundee goalkeeper is the ideal candidate to come in and compete.

Celtic have bloated their squad with a high volume of ‘project’ signings over the last decade…
How Jon McCracken compares to Kasper Schmeichel and Viljami Sinisalo
Data from the 2025/26 Scottish Premiership shows that the 25-year-old is one of the best goalkeepers in the league.
Steven Pressley’s side are towards the bottom of the table but without McCracken, it would be a whole lot worse.
| Stats | Jon McCracken | Viljami Sinisalo | Kasper Schmeichel |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saves per 90 | 3.88 | 2.10 | 2.30 |
| Total saves | 119 | 48 | 82 |
| Save percentage | 70.4 | 66.8 | 66.2 |
| Goals prevented | +7.1 | +1.2 | -2.4 |
No goalkeeper has made more saves per 90 minutes in the league than McCracken and his overall save percentage is higher than both of Celtic’s options.
It is worth adding that Dundee do concede more chances per 90 minutes but the 25-year-old is crucially keeping his side in games.
Jon McCracken could aid with homegrown quota
With a number of bit-part players expected to depart Celtic this summer, which could include the likes of Anthony Ralston, the Hoops will have to be conscious of ensuring they fulfil a homegrown quota for European competitions.
McCracken began his career with Hamilton Academical and has also been called up to the Scotland squad too, showcasing his talent.

The 25-year-old is out of contract at Dens Park too, meaning he could come in for free to compete with Sinisalo and allow funds to be spent elsewhere.
Luke Graham may have also been auditioning for a move to the Hoops, and the pair could find themselves reunited with Luke McCowan if all goes to plan.
