Benjamin Nygren often comes in for some unfair criticism at Celtic despite being the club’s top goalscorer this season.

We wrote just after Celtic drew with Rangers in the Scottish Premiership that critics need to lay off Nygren after he helped the Hoops’ Ibrox fightback.

And just before Celtic played Motherwell this afternoon at Parkhead, Simon Donnelly praised Nygren as he labelled the Swede ‘a funny player’, and it’s a verdict that is hard to disagree with.

Donnelly says ‘phenomenal’ Benjamin Nygren is underrated at Celtic

Nygren has saved Celtic’s season on a number of occasions this season as important goals and assists have proven.

And Donnelly believes people need to lay off the Swede as Donnelly told Celtic TV, “He’s a funny player, because sometimes he can be quite quiet in the game.

“But what we spoke about, is it an art? Is it a skill, you know, popping up time and time again in that box?

“He shows composure, and his goal tally has been phenomenal.

“He’s a different midfielder to the other ones, but he’s been so important. Popped up with so many important goals.”

Donnelly is right, Benjamin Nygren is ‘phenomenal’

The general consensus appears to be that Nygren doesn’t do much apart from score goals. Well, if that’s the case then we at 67 Hail Hail hope that continues this season.

With just eight games to go, Celtic need goals from any position regardless of who bangs them in, and it seems Nygren is the Hoops’ best hope.

As for the Swede being quiet during games, the new manager can work on that during the summer pre-season because all Martin O’Neill will want is to see his players score goals, to win games, to defend the title.

And if Nygren does that from now until the end of the season, then no one will be speaking about anything else the Celtic midfielder did or did not do.
