Celtic managed to overcome Ferencvaros 2-0 in a monumental Europa League result at Parkhead this afternoon.
Goals from Kyogo Furuhashi and David Turnbull (yes, we’re giving him it) ensured we managed to throw ourselves back into contention for qualification into the last-32.
Many will be looking at the result and look mainly at what it does in the context of our European aspirations. But the truth is, this was an absolutely massive result with regards to our season as a whole.
Sure, the priority is the domestic campaign. It’s not as if these 3 points can be transferred over to the Premiership. However, at the moment, Celtic’s number 1 priority is momentum. We can get away with not winning against Real Betis away from home and Bayer Leverkusen. But Ferencvaros at Celtic Park? It was a disaster last season and it would’ve been similar this year.
Celtic are in the process of getting something going with big results against Aberdeen and Motherwell respectively. Yet fans were still to see whether their team really is the real deal. Whether they could perform against a solid European outfit who have given Betis and Bayer a run for their money.
Thankfully, that’s exactly what happened. The Celtic players rose to the occasion and managed to produce a performance that’s up there with anything else we’ve shown this season.

The fact is we’ve already used our excuses. The injury crisis was correctly used as a key reason for our downturn in mid-September. The same goes for the fact the manager was still to figure out his best XI whilst players were still integrating into life at Celtic Park.
None of that is the case anymore. Defeat today, or even just a failure to win, would’ve been pretty damning. It would’ve been another letdown at a time when the club is trying to convince supporters the only way is up from here.
Anything other than 3 points this afternoon was going to be hugely damaging for morale. Hugely damaging for the trust invested in the manager from the supporters.
But today has been nothing but positive. It shows solid improvement from last season given we lost to the same side who have apparently improved under Peter Stoger this year. It’s a sign perhaps of just how good Celtic can be.
The main challenge now is consistency, as it’s been for some time now. But even that’s a question Celtic are answering with 3 consecutive wins across all competitions.
Today could’ve battered morale ahead of a crucial week of domestic games against St Johnstone and Hibernian respectively. Instead, we go into both absolutely flying.
