It perhaps seems rather ominous for the future of Celtic right-back Anthony Ralston that he wasn’t selected for the Hoops in the recent Champions qualifier against Sarajevo.

Neil Lennon elected to play Kristoffer Ajer at right-back instead, with Ralston only a substitute for the game.

The fact that Ralston, despite being the only right-back at the club, wasn’t selected for the game, may mean that he is out of favour at the moment.

Could be selected for friendly

However, he could be given a chance to prove what he can do if he is selected for the friendly against Rennes on Saturday.

It makes all the sense in the world to start Ralston in the game. He needs game time in case the Hoops suffer some injuries.

Should Ajer get injured for example, Ralston would need to start the next game.

Chance to prove to manager that he deserves a chance

He will also get a chance to prove to Neil Lennon that he deserves to be involved more.

It does seem obvious that Celtic will be buying another right-back very soon. The club are desperately in need of one.

Should Ralston turn in a decent display, then he deserves to be under consideration at right-back. Even if that is as back-up right-back.

It remains to be seen if he will get that chance though. Neil Lennon will make that decision.
