‘Best partner I had’ – Henrik Larsson once ranked Celtic teammate ahead of Wayne Rooney

Henrik Larsson can safely be described as one of Celtic’s best players of all time.

Larsson is one of Celtic’s all-time leading goal scorers and the former Sweden international is immortalised as a Celtic legend forever.

The forward was a prolific bags man under Martin O’Neill, who was able to assemble a brilliant squad.

Although he played with some talented players, Larsson also represented the likes of Barcelona and Manchester United, but, the striker thinks that one former Hoops teammate is his best partner of all time.

Henrik Larsson said Chris Sutton was his best strike partner

Considering Larsson has played alongside Wayne Rooney, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Samuel Eto’o, it may be a shock to see that the Bhoys fan favourite named Chris Sutton as his all-time favourite strike partner.

Sutton joined Celtic in 2000 and lined up alongside Larsson for four seasons, winning endless trophies and reaching the 2003 UEFA Cup final.

They were phenomenal up front together and in an appearance on the Lockdown tactics podcast in 2020 with Kris Boyd and Robert Snodgrass, revealed that there was no better partner than Sutton.

“Chris Sutton was the best partner I ever had,” he said. “A big guy with vision who knew how to play the game.

“He was totally unselfish. He worked very hard, never stopped running and he could score goals. It was easy to play with him. When he went up for a header, I just had to judge where to run.”

Henrik Larsson and Chris Sutton’s combined goals tally

In the four years that the two played together, it’s clear to see just how deadly the pair were in front of goal.

Between the two of them, the pair scored 241 goals and were responsible for the three Scottish Premiership titles, two Scottish Cups and two Scottish League Cups.

Even to this day, no Celtic strike partnership has been as lethal and it’s unlikely we will ever see one as good as that again.
