We don’t always follow the same career path that we expect to lead.

For one reason or another, we sometimes find ourselves in different jobs and that is fine.

Most of us dream of working or playing for Celtic, and while one of Brendan Rodgers’ backroom staff is still doing that, his initial goal was to be working in the world of sports journalism.

Gavin Strachan wanted to be a sports journalist

Gavin Strachan has been a part of the Celtic furniture since 2020 when he came in to replace Damien Duff.

If you’re unfamiliar with Strachan, you can often find him in the dugout with the laptop; and he is the son of former Celtic manager, Gordon.

Having also played professional football, the coach initially wanted to move into the media after hanging up his playing boots.

Strachan did a degree in sports journalism at Staffordshire University, but decided that coaching suited him more.

“I did a degree in journalism and enjoyed it,” he told the Scotsman in 2020. “I just found out that when I stopped playing there weren’t as many opportunities as I had expected.

“I then thought about being a coach, although I wasn’t sure if I’d like it. But I lived it and that’s the direction I decided to go. I haven’t looked back.”

During his five years at Celtic, Strachan has worked under plenty of managers.

Rodgers is the man who has been in charge the longest, and the 46-year-old has become a key figure in the backroom staff, helping to improve the midfield area of the pitch.

“An incredible amount of work goes on here from the coaching staff to help the players develop,” said the Northern Irishman.

“We will identify areas they need to be better in. Harry will sit with the forward players, John the defenders and Gavin the midfield players.”
