Celtic kick off their Scottish Premiership campaign against St Mirren this weekend.

Brendan Rodgers’ side were crowned champions for the fourth time in a row last season and are on the hunt to secure that famous 10-in-a-row.

Kieran Tierney will make his second competitive debut for the Hoops after returning to the club in the summer while fellow new signings Benjamin Nygren, Shin Yamada and others could all play in front of the home faithful.

It’s the first time since 2008 that the two teams have met on the opening day, where they were involved in a controversial clash.

Celtic secure narrow win against St Mirren with controversial penalty

Gordon Strachan’s side started the defence of their league title with a game against St Mirren to kick off the 2008/09 season.

It wasn’t straightforward as the visitors proved to be tough opposition and difficult to break down.

Things changed in the second half though when Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink pounced on a long ball before firing wide while under pressure from Will Haining.

Referee Eddie Smith then awarded the Bhoys a penalty and sent off Haining for shirt pulling despite replays showing that Vennegoor of Hesselink had done his fair share too.

Barry Robson stepped up and squeezed the ball home after his effort was initially saved with his legs before spinning over the right side of the line to hand the Bhoys a slender win.

Celtic’s H2H record vs St Mirren

The meeting on 3 August is the 59th competitive meeting between the two sides and to nobody’s surprise, it’s Celtic who have dominated the fixture.

From the 58 games, Celtic have won 47 of those and will feel confident about making that number 48 this weekend.

St Mirren have won five times, with only one of those victories coming at Celtic Park in that time.
