Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel is unlikely to fulfil his dream of reaching 1,000 senior career appearances after his update on his shoulder injury.

Schmeichel admitted his Celtic career may be over after finding out that the surgery required on his shoulder injury will rule him out for 10-12 months.

The 39-year-old should still be considered as a success at Celtic, even if this season has served up some difficult moments, after breaking several records. However, the one he really wants is now in doubt.

Kasper Schmeichel wanted to reach 1,000 career appearances

As it stands, Schmeichel has made 919 career appearances, meaning he requires 81 more to reach the magic 1,000.

Speaking about it in June 2025, he told RecordSport: “It would be fantastic if I could reach 1,000 games.

“You could say it would be a special milestone because not many people manage to play as many games as that.

“I’m the type who doesn’t see limitations, but rather opportunities. I enjoy what I do immensely.

“The only thing that can stop those ambitions is if there is a serious injury.”

That final sentence has since come true for Schmeichel in a cruel twist of fate and he will now also have to miss the World Cup play-off games with Denmark, as well as the last chance to compete in the USA, Canada and Mexico if they qualify.

Kasper Schmeichel will play into his 40s if he wants to reach the goal

Now that the 39-year-old is unlikely to play for the Hoops again, any chances of him reaching the milestone number will see him playing into his 40s.

The chances of other clubs making an approach to sign him seem unlikely, especially in the top leagues.

If he retires, the possibility of going into coaching or punditry seems more likely. Stevie Woods’ position as Celtic goalkeeping coach won’t be under threat, but now that he is set for a lengthy period on the sidelines, he will have time to decide what happens next.
