Before the 2026 World Cup, there is the small matter of the Africa Cup of Nations.

Sebastian Tounekti and Kelechi Iheanacho are both likely to be in action, with the two expected to miss a number of games throughout January.

Celtic have been lucky enough to have several top African players represent the Hoops at Parkhead, but only one of them has lifted the crown while playing in Scotland.

Efe Ambrose won the Africa Cup of Nations while at Celtic

Back in 2013, Efe Ambrose was called up to Nigeria’s squad for the Africa Cup of Nations.

He left Neil Lennon’s side to join up with his countrymen and went all the way to the final.

Burkina Faso were the opponents on the night but it was Ambrose and the Super Eagles who emerged victorious.

Ambrose played the full 90 minutes as Nigeria won the game 1-0 to lift the title in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Former Celtic players who have played in AFCON

As well as Ambrose, there were also some fellow former Hoops that competed in AFCON.

Kolo Toure is the only other former Celtic player to have won the competition, but did so one year before he joined the club in 2016.

Others also included Mubarak Wakaso, Kundai Benyu, Landry N’Guemo and Henri Camara.

More notable figures such as Bobo Balde, Momo Sylla and Olivier Tebilly also played.
