Sportsound pundit Michael Stewart was left impressed by the first-half display of Celtic target David Turnbull this evening, speaking live on BBC Radio Scotland (18:21).
Turnbull is in action for Motherwell tonight, against Hibernian in the Scottish Premiership, and in one key passage of play set-up Stephen O’Donnell for a chance with a classy pass.
It didn’t result in a goal for the Steelmen, but it was one of several moments from Turnbull that caught the eye of pundits live on the BBC.
Celtic are said to still be keeping an eye on the midfielder.
The Scottish Daily Mail reported in July (29/07 print edition, page 82) that the club were monitoring his progress between now and October before making the decision on a fresh pursuit of the player.
Stewart understands why Celtic tried to sign him last summer and thinks he could easily make the transition into Neil Lennon’s squad based on the latest evidence.
He told host Sportsound host Richard Gordon at half-time in the ‘Well match (18:21): “It was a great ball, that’s what David Turnbull has in his locker, great vision.
“It was inch-perfect for Stephen O’Donnell, it sliced open the defence. It’s good to see Turnbull back playing with confidence, moving freely.
“He’s a special talent, there’s no doubt about that. It was no surprise that Celtic were desperately trying to sign him.
“For me, he’s someone who can seamlessly step into a team that has a lot of talent and ability.”
Turnbull came very close to making a Celtic Park switch in 2019, even visiting Lennoxtown and meeting Lennon following an agreed deal between the Bhoys and Motherwell.
However, a knee issue uncovered in his medical wrecked the move and it has taken him a long time to get back to regular action.
The 21-year-old is again creating more hype in the early stages of this season though, impressing tonight and getting himself on the scoresheet against Livingston midweek.
