Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has dropped his latest hint on Andy Robertson joining Celtic.

The pair, who were signed in the same summer at Liverpool, developed a close friendship at Anfield.

Since Oxlade-Chamberlain made his move to Glasgow, Robertson – a well-known Celtic fan – has publicly voiced his excitement about his mate playing for the Hoops.

Now, the midfielder is hoping that the Scotland captain will return the favour.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on Andy Robertson joining Celtic

Speaking on the Celtic FC Podcast, Oxlade-Chamberlain said on Robertson: “Yeah, we were very close with Robbo and his family, his mum and dad.

“We were next door neighbours for years, so I knew about Celtic and Glasgow, to be honest, from them for years. Robbo makes it no secret what he thinks about this club.

“And yeah, when I was linked, he was the first one who called me and said, ‘get yourself up there now’.

“But I’m obviously really close with Robbo and his missus and his kids, and my missus is really close with them also, so we get on really well with them.

“Having him as a reference point was perfect for me. He’s told me where I need to live, Where I need to go, where the rest…

“He’s told me everything. He’s a proper Glasgow boy… I just said to him, ‘it’s a shame you’re not here with me…’

“Maybe came a bit early… he might join me soon. He’s a bit younger than me, Robbo. I’d hope to see him here one day. I think he’d be amazing here.”

Robertson came close to joining Tottenham during the January transfer window, and his contract expires at Liverpool in the summer.

Would Andy Robertson join Celtic in the summer?

The obvious question mark over Celtic signing Robertson is the same dilemma that Scotland have faced over the last decade: the fact that you can only play with one left-back.

Steve Clarke worked around this by pushing Robertson forward as a wing-back, and having Kieran Tierney in a wide centre-half role.

But unless Celtic move away from their usual back four to accommodate the pair, they would find themselves in direct competition for a spot in the team.

If Robertson wants a nailed-on spot in the team at his next club, he will have more suitable options than Celtic – but wouldn’t be the first footballer to follow his heart over his head.
