Andy Walker slams suggestion Celtic should sell ‘captain material’ player because he is ‘injury prone’

It’s going to be interesting to see who leaves Celtic in the summer.

Back in the winter, many were left surprised when Kyogo Furuhashi left Celtic, so could a few of those types of exits be in the offing again?

For some, the obvious writing is on the wall, like Greg Taylor, whose contract expires in the summer, and there aren’t any signs that he will sign a new deal.

Then there is Maik Nawrocki, who, despite doing very little wrong and impressing every time he gets given a chance, continually finds him out of Celtic’s XI, and even the matchday squad.

But what other changes should, Scotland’s most successful club, make to their backline this summer?

With the Celtic Park faithful wanting new centre-backs added when the transfer window re-opens, Cameron Carter-Vickers’ name was put on the table in an unexpected fashion.

Celtic told to sell Cameron Carter-Vickers because of his injury record

Amid question marks over Celtic’s defence, especially in 2025, with Liam Scales and Auston Trusty not cementing down a place, then it makes Carter-Vickers even more important.

The 27-year-old is the only one who, performance-wise, fans have trust in, as everyone else is divided on Scales and Trusty.

But when it was suggested to Andy Walker that Celtic should look to sell Carter-Vickers because he is ‘injury-prone’, that quickly shut that down, as he told Go Radio.

“No, I would certainly keep Carter-Vickers,” said Walker. “I think he is a terrific player. I think he is a great influence. I think he is almost captain material, well, he is captain material at the back. He leads the defence.

“In Callum McGregor’s absence, he normally picks up the armband. He is a great example to everyone else, so I think he is there to stay.

“Yeah, of course, (you just manage Carter-Vickers’ injury record).”

Carter-Vickers’ injury record since joining Celtic

Carter-Vickers joined Celtic in 2021 from Tottenham, before securing a permanent transfer in 2022 under Ange Postecoglou.

Since then, he has become the mainstay of the backline, the main guy and one of the first names on the teamsheet.

But, one thing can’t be argued is that he has missed games through injury, including this season, so how does his record look?
