Ange Postecoglou comments on Daizen Maeda to Celtic reports
Ange Postecoglou has refused to confirm or deny reports that Celtic are close to signing Daizen Maeda from his former side Yokohama F.Marinos.
The Times reported this morning that Celtic were confident on bringing the 18-goal talent to Glasgow in the January transfer window.
Postecoglou maintained this policy of refusing to confirm interest in individuals throughout the summer transfer window, so his stance isn’t much of a surprise. However, he did reiterate Celtic’s intention to look across the globe for fresh talent to bring into the club.
Speaking in his pre-match press conference, the Bhoys boss said in response to a question on interest in the player [YouTube]: “I can neither confirm nor deny. There is no doubt the Japanese league is one I know very well. I guess I’ve got an advantage there.
“Obviously I know Daizen well, I was the one who brought him to Yokahama F.Marinos. I can definitely confirm we are not in advanced talks with anyone to sign anyone at the moment.
“We will be casting the net far and wide, we are not going to just limit it to the Japanese league.
“With the way we have started the season and seeing how some of our younger players have been playing, we have become an attractive destination for players but I am not going to rush into that.”
So, I don’t think we’ll be finding out much from the manager between now in January when it comes to specific players.
Maeda looks like a strong option that certainly fits the way Celtic are playing at the moment under Ange. Still just 24, he also has the potential to improve further and become one of the J-League’s next great exports.
However, we are only in October. It’s too early for the club to be concluding deals, even if they are clearly looking.
