Peterborough United Director of Football Barry Fry has delivered some bad news to Celtic about forward Ivan Toney.
The 24-year-old had been recommended by new Hoops coach Gavin Strachan (Scottish Sun) and talk had been rife that he could move north of the border this summer.
Those rumours were confirmed by Fry on Thursday, but the Englishman also delivered a dose of bad news as he confirmed another club had met Toney’s valuation. (Daily Mail, 23/07, page 86)
“We have given a club permission to speak to Ivan because they met our valuation,” Fry said.
“It’s not Celtic but, out of courtesy, I let Celtic know what had happened.
“They asked to be kept informed and we informed them. I haven’t heard from them since then.”
Toney was top scorer in the English third tier this season, netting 24 goals in 32 league matches.
Fry comments prove there was Celtic interest
So it seems like there was a genuine interest from ourselves in Toney.
That may have just been a passing request to be kept informed, but it does tell us that Neil Lennon isn’t totally happy with his current striking options.
There are big question marks over all of the forwards at the club, bar Odsonne Edouard, and you really feel we could do with another signing during the window.
Toney would have been a great addition but we were perhaps just priced out by his valuation.
It will be interesting to see where the youngster ends up, and indeed how much he moves for.
