BBC Sportsound pundit Billy Dodds finds it ‘incredible’ that Celtic didn’t make a move for in-form striker Lyndon Dykes during the summer transfer window, speaking on Friday night’s edition of the programme.
Dykes made the switch from Livingston to Queens Park Rangers and has netted five goals in 12 appearances across both clubs since the start of the season.
He’s also massively impressed Scotland supporters too, netting twice in six caps on their way to the European Championships.
The Australian-born forward has given Steve Clarke’s team a focal point in attack, something that had been badly lacking in the Scotland set-up.
Dodds can’t believe that Celtic or Rangers didn’t bite on his £2m asking price, telling BBC Sportsound: “This guy has something else for me, and that’s that pace and mobility. I don’t think Steven Fletcher [had that].
“Very similar, and I can understand that comparison because there was an intelligence about Fletcher when he did go up. It wouldn’t just be a flick-on, it would be a hold up to bring players into the game.
“I’m not saying Dykes is a better player yet, he’s still got a way to go, but on the evidence I’ve seen, I was surprised that the Old Firm never had a go at him for £2 million. Incredible. Especially the way he played against them.
“This guy, he can run like the wind. This guy’s got more to his game and more potential.”
The Daily Mail reported back in June that Celtic were on the trail of the striker, who scored 13 goals and assisted ten more during a shortened 2019/20 season.
As noted by Dodds, he also managed to impress up against the Hoops, giving Christopher Jullien plenty to think about.

Ultimately we have chosen to go with Albian Ajeti, and that doesn’t look like a bad buy at this point either.
As Dykes’ reputation continues to improve though, no doubt, some fans will wonder what might have been.
In other news, several Celtic players are on the brink of rubbing shoulders with world-class players.
