Birmingham City are going to try and use a former Celtic player again to try and reach for the stars.
Last summer, Birmingham signed Tomoki Iwata from Celtic, and he was nominated for PFA Player of the Year, as Chris Davies’ side romped the league by winning England’s third tier.
And now, the Midlands-based club want to go one better by reaching the Premier League, as they have signed Celtic hero, Kyogo Furuhashi, from Rennes.
Only six months ago, Kyogo was playing in the Champions League and firing Brendan Rodgers’ side into the knockout stages.
But now, the Japan star is back on British soil, but in the odd colours of blue, as his new club are pretty excited about what he did when he was in Scotland.

Birmingham City laud Kyogo Furuhashi’s time at Celtic
This is a huge signing for Birmingham and one of the biggest names and profiles of players they have purchased in over a decade.
That’s why Birmingham’s social media account wanted to relive Kyogo’s Celtic days and all those goals he used to score, including that banging long-range effort against Rangers.
As many of the Celtic Park faithful will be aware, the 30-year-old might not get involved as much in the play, but when he comes alive, it’s deadly, effective and very hard to stop.
‘We could tell you how good our new signing is, or we could just show you,’ wrote Birmingham, added with a video compilation of his goals for Celtic.
Birmingham also wrote on their official website: ‘The Japan international has been with French side Rennes since January, but is no stranger to British football, having enjoyed a successful spell north of the border with Celtic, where he won eight domestic trophies.
‘Furuhashi was also a regular for Celtic in the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League, and registered impressive goal involvements against the likes of Atletico Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen, Lazio and RB Leipzig. In total, he scored 85 goals for Celtic in 165 games prior to his move to Rennes in January 2025.’
Kyogo, the big game player at Celtic
Kyogo is regarded as one of Celtic’s best strikers after the King of Kings, Henrik Larsson, and that’s some company to be in.
Yes, the Japan star’s form dipped during his final 12 months at Celtic, but Brendan Rodgers and all the supporters were still gutted to see him go.
But still, Kyogo was a big game player, as his goals in Europe, semi-finals, finals, and derby matches prove.
- Games for Celtic: 165
- Goals: 85
- Goals against Rangers: 8
- Goals in semi-finals: 1
- Goals in finals: 5
- Goals in Europe: 5
