Brendan Rodgers addresses the biggest transfer priority at Celtic this summer

As Celtic fans continue to wait for the club to make the first signing of the summer, it seems Brendan Rodgers is in a similar boat.

The Bhoys boss obviously has much more insight into what’s going on behind the scenes at the club as targets are identified and negotiations rumble on.

However, Rodgers has admitted that it’s all a bit of a waiting game for him, too. The manager is keen to see recruits through the door and remains hopeful quality deals will be done.

The biggest position of need right now is between the sticks at goalkeeper. Joe Hart’s retirement has left a gaping hole in the squad that isn’t going to be filled by Scott Bain – or any of the other options – permanently.

Supporters want a new number one in the door as quickly as possible, recognising that it could take time for the new man to adjust to his new surroundings and the defence in front of him.

Brendan Rodgers acknowledges the Celtic goalkeeper situation

Speaking after Friday night’s draw with Ayr United, the Celtic manager said [Football Scotland]: “It’s certainly one of the areas that we needed to improve and we’ve known that since Joe said that he was leaving. So, yes, that again, a bit of time.

“But we aim to have that, hopefully, done by the beginning of the season, for sure. There are loads of names flying about. So, just a good one would be nice.”

Rodgers isn’t wrong about the amount of names being linked with the Scottish champions. By our count, there have been at least 20 different goalkeepers reported as a potential option for Celtic.

Celtic boss quizzed about Kasper Schmeichel

One of the names that came up in Rodgers’ pitch-side media address is former Leicester City shot-stop Kasper Schmeichel, who worked with the Celtic boss at the Foxes.

Rodgers wouldn’t be drawn on that speculation too much but did note that he rates the Dane as a proper talent.

He said: “Kasper’s a very, very good one. I know Kasper very well. But there are lots of names. and clearly I’m not going to tell you who those names are.”
