Leicester City boss and former Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has ended any prospect of the Hoops landing Filip Benkovic on loan.
The centre-back won the treble for Celtic last season before return to his parent club Leicester City. He has not managed to force his way into the first-team so far this season. Indeed, he recently turned out for Leicester’s under-23 side
Back in May, the player indicated that he would perhaps like to return to the club. However, Brendan Rodgers has revealed that the player will not be leaving Leicester this summer.
“He won’t be going anywhere”
“Yes, he’ll stay, he won’t be going anywhere” Rodgers said, as reported by Leicestershire Live.
The chances of Benkovic making a return to Celtic did seem quite slim. Especially after the Hoops spent big on Christopher Jullien.
However, the fact that the player has been unable to get into the Leicester team perhaps gave some fans hope that the player could be open to a return.
Former Hoops boss had indicated that player could return
Brendan Rodgers even told the Daily Record in May that if Benkovic was to go on loan again, it would be to Celtic.
However, that was before Leicester sold Harry Maguire to Manchester United. For that reason, Leicester need to keep hold of any centre-back they have.
Perhaps if Benkovic hasn’t managed to break into the first-team by January he and Leicester may be open to another loan deal.
As it stands though, the player won’t be making a return to Celtic any time soon.
