Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor has spoken to reporters about transfer target David Turnbull today, lauding his ability, The Daily Record reports.

The Scottish Sun reported on Sunday night that Celtic are likely to finally complete the signing of Turnbull this week after coming so close to landing him last summer.

The paper said that club staff such as Nick Hammond and Gavin Strachan have been actively scouting the player in the early stages of the new season following his return to fitness.

Indeed, manager Neil Lennon confirmed the club’s interest in the player today, telling BBC Scotland that talks regarding his signature are ongoing.

Now McGregor has gone on the record with his hope that the move is finalised, apparently a big fan of the Scotland U21 international.

As quoted by The Daily Record, the Celtic midfielder said: “I think he’s been excellent. Obviously Celtic have been monitoring him for a while and he’s a top young player so I think it’d be good if we could get him in.

“It would be another face and competition for the boys as well and that always drives the standard on.

“His style of play is similar to myself. You want to do everything in the game and chip in with goals and assists as well.

“So he is definitely a young, exciting talent and all the right noises are coming from everywhere. Everybody likes him, he’s a good kid as well and to get him in would be good for Celtic.”

It’s doubtful that McGregor would be speaking so openly about an opposition player if there was not confidence at Celtic’s end the move is a goer.

Turnbull has been outstanding in the opening stages of the season, finding himself on the scoresheet against Livingston before impressing against both Hibernian and Hamilton, albeit without wins for the Steelmen.

Although midfield is hardly a priority position for Celtic right now, bringing in a player with the potential to help us transition into a new era at the Bhoys is welcome from my perspective.

One star at Celtic Park seems to agree.

In other news, Celtic are said to have won the race for Aaron Hickey.
