Celtic reportedly have ‘concrete interest’ in Reims midfielder Mory Gbane.

A major rebuild is expected for Martin O’Neill’s men this summer, with the midfield especially expected to see plenty of change.

Arne Engels is expected to leave in the coming weeks, and there are serious questions over the futures of Reo Hatate and Paulo Bernardo. Even Callum McGregor’s situation is generating speculation.

In Gbane, O’Neill could add a profile that does not presently exist in the Hoops midfield.

Celtic, West Ham and Trabzonspor in the race for Mory Gbane

According to Sebastien Denis of Foot Mercato in France, the midfielder has caught the eyes of West Ham and Trabzonspor as well as Celtic.

Second-tier Reims will not rule out a sale in the event of a ‘good offer’.

Gbane is a 6 ft 2 in, out-and-out defensive midfielder. It’s often said that nobody has occupied this role in a Hoops squad since Victor Wanyama.

Like Wanyama, Gbane has also spent time playing as a centre-back. He was a £4.4 million signing for Reims in February 2025, but they were relegated just months later.

He started just over half of their games last season as they failed in their bid for immediate promotion back to Ligue 1.

Gbane made his international debut for Cote d’Ivoire last summer, but didn’t make the cut for the World Cup this summer.

He has previously played in Croatia, Russia and Portugal, from where he made his move to France 18 months ago.

Newly-relegated West Ham have already made £80 million from the sale of Mateus Fernandes to Tottenham this summer.

Martin O’Neill on future Celtic signings

O’Neill recently confirmed that he intends to add more signings in the coming weeks, with work ongoing.

He said: “We have a number of players that we’re looking at.

“And I’m hoping in the not-too-distant future, and I mean maybe in the next couple of weeks, that we will have some really decent players at the football club to add to the very decent players we have at the football club.”
