Celtic have confirmed the early exit of Shane Duffy, who returns to Brighton & Hove Albion after his loan in Glasgow.

Duffy had been due to stay until the end of the season, but with two games remaining he has already moved back to England.

The Scottish Sun had reported the news on Thursday, but the club hadn’t commented on the story until this afternoon.

It’s said he had picked up an injury that ruled him out of matches against St Johnstone and Hibernian, so it doesn’t make much sense to keep him around.

A simple update came via the Celtic social media team on Twitter.

The Scottish Sun say the entire deal to have Duffy on loan at Celtic for the season cost a massive Β£3m.

Duffy never really impressed beyond goals scored right at the start of his Celtic run. In fact, it rapidly became apparent he was either not good enough or simply ill-suited to the Celtic style of play.

Whoever scouted him to take part in this high Celtic defensive line, with lots of time on the ball, clearly got it badly wrong.

There had initially been excitement about a Republic of Ireland international starring for the club, so the way it has turned out has been a massive disappointment for everyone involved.

Nobody more so than the fans of course, who have greeted today’s confirmation with delight. There is now no lingering danger of Duffy staying on at the club into next season.

These supporters have taken to social media to share their thoughts on it all this afternoon…
