Celtic defensive target Joseph Okumu on verge of move to Belgium
Celtic defensive target Joseph Okumu is on the verge of a move to Belgium, Goal reports this weekend.
Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet reported at the start of the month that Celtic were one of a number of clubs who has tabled an offer to Elfsborg for the centre-half, alongside Rangers, two French sides and Gent.
It was said that the Swedish club had been holding out for £3.4m before sanctioning his sale.
Gent now looks like the most likely destination, with Okumu travelling to Belgium this week for discussions.
A source told Goal: “He is in Ghent for formal talks with the club. Negotiations have been ongoing and if everything is agreed on, he will become Gent’s new player soon.”
Okumu has previously stated his desire for a summer transfer move, so it seemed inevitable he would exit Elfsborg. Sadly it won’t be to Celtic!
Celtic badly need defenders even if it’s not Joseph Okumu
The 24-year-old has had a fascinating footballing journey so far – starting his career in Africa before moving to the USA.
Since landing in Europe he’s made 41 appearances for Elfsborg and cemented himself in the Kenyan national team.
Given so many clubs were reportedly after his signature, he’s obviously been impressing a number of scouts and analysts. It’ll now be very interesting to see how he does in the Belgian Pro League.
Celtic badly need defenders in the door. Shane Duffy has returned to Brighton. Kristoffer Ajer has publicly stated his desire to leave. Christopher Jullien is recovering from a long-term injury.
If we want to hit the ground running this season under Ange Postecoglou then that has to be the priority position. The thought of going into European qualifiers with Nir Bitton and Stephen Welsh doesn’t strike me with great confidence.
