Celtic eyeing sensational Raheem Sterling loan in reported Brendan Rodgers reunion attempt

Brendan Rodgers has made a habit out of reuniting with previous players at Celtic.

Fans will all remember Scott Sinclair’s sensational Hoops debut, which set the tone for an SFWA Player of the Year-winning season for the winger.

Sinclair’s move to Celtic allowed him to rediscover his best form, which he showed whilst playing under Rodgers at Swansea City.

More recently, Kasper Schmeichel has been brought to Glasgow having worked with Rodgers to great success at Leicester City – and Kelechi Iheanacho has now followed suit.

If the latter’s debut is anything to go by, then both could be further examples of the Hoops boss using his contacts book to great effect.

But according to one report, he could use it to greater effect than ever before in the next transfer window.

Celtic linked with sensational move for Raheem Sterling

Raheem Sterling is an outcast at Chelsea, having spent last season on loan to play a bit-part role at London rivals Arsenal.

After returning to his parent club this summer, Sterling – whose contract runs for another two years – was unable to secure a move before the deadline, despite not being in manager Enzo Maresca’s plans at all.

But according to footballtransfers, a move to Glasgow could be on the menu for him in January.

The report says that a fresh start under a manager he knows in Rodgers could make the move appealing for Sterling, who is earning a wage of around £300,000 a week.

Celtic would obviously not be able to match this, but a potential wage-sharing agreement has been floated. Sterling’s options have reportedly been narrowed by his reluctance to move abroad.

With his side short on wingers, the move would make sense for Rodgers’ Celtic squad – particularly given his ability to play on both sides.

A big question mark surrounding the move is whether Sterling plans to force his way into the England squad for next season’s World Cup – a move to Scotland would make this extremely unlikely.

Raheem Sterling played some of his best football under Brendan Rodgers

Whilst at Liverpool in the 2013-14 season, Rodgers helped elevate a teenage Sterling to become one of the most talked-about players in the country.

Despite now being primarily a winger, Sterling’s role was much more freedom-based in that Reds side, which often saw him playing in a role withdrawn from Luis Suarez or Daniel Sturridge.

There is unfortunately little likelihood of the 30-year-old rediscovering that form – but if he can rediscover the fitness which was often praised by Pep Guardiola in his time at Manchester City, he could be an excellent signing for the Hoops.

Until more concrete reports emerge, though, it will remain a barely believable rumour.
