Celtic fans are excited about potentially signing Philadelphia Union defender Mark McKenzie after his transfer comments this week.

Sky Sports reporter Anthony Joseph, a Celtic fan himself, has been at the forefront of the reports linking the centre-back with a move to Scotland.

He managed to secure an exclusive interview with the Major League Soccer talent and quizzed him on potentially signing up at Celtic Park in January.

McKenzie admitted he was open to it, telling the broadcaster: “I’ve done my fair share of research (on Celtic and the Scottish Premiership) and I’ve always loved football so I’ve known about Celtic for a while. You hear about Celtic and the path of Virgil Van Dijk – going from there to the Prem.

“I’m no dummy when it comes to understanding the leagues. I have a general idea of what the leagues look like and keeping up with who is at the front of the pack in the league race and tournaments. I know about Celtic and the league – and a lot of other leagues. But it’s an exciting time, though.”

The defender had a great season across the Atlantic, making 26 appearances in total and winning plaudits for his performances.

Last month he was nominated for the MLS Defender of the Year award.

Now looking to push forward with a career in Europe, it seems Celtic is one of his preferred destinations.

Naturally, the comments have attracted the attention of Bhoys fans.

With question marks about Kristoffer Ajer’s long-term future at the club and Shane Duffy only on loan, we could do with a talent who can develop and play at a high level for Celtic.

Is McKenzie the man?
