Some Celtic fans react to the signing of Moritz Bauer

Celtic have announced the signing of right-back Moritz Bauer on a season-long loan from Stoke City.

The player, who was linked with a move to the club last summer, is something of a surprise arrival.

The Hoops have clearly been working behind the scenes, away from media speculation, to get the deal over the line.

Although only at Celtic Park on a temporary basis, we have the option to buy the player at the end of the season.

Bauer has a decent playing history, enjoying spells at Grasshoppers and Rubin Kazan before making the switch to England last January.

Things didn’t quite work out for him at the Potters.

Appearing 15 times for the club in the Premier League as they headed for relegation, he managed just eight Championship appearances last season after falling out of favour.

He did however win Rubin Kazan’s player of the year award in 2017, so the hope will be he can find that kind of form in Scotland.

He’s also won six caps with Austria, the most recent of which came in June 2018.

Loans are rarely ideal, but at least with an option to buy there will be hope he can become a long-term success in the position. If not, he heads back to Stoke.

It’s relatively risk free, if a little uninspiring for supporters.
