He made six appearances for the Bundesliga side, also featuring for their U21 side, which plays in the country’s third tier. The clause was reportedly worth €7.5 million.
Campbell was born in Houston, Texas in the USA, to an American father and an Icelandic mother: ex-international footballer Rakel Karvelsson.
After playing in Iceland and the US at youth level, he was signed by Borussia Dortmund at the age of 16. He has made seven senior appearances for the club.
Parkhead chiefs will be hoping that the recruitment groundwork done over recent months by Maloney will provide better results this summer.
Fares Ghedjemis is another left-footed right winger widely linked with the club; Celtic are reportedly set to battle for his signature again this summer after being rejected by him six months.
Mvuka was brought to Glasgow on loan instead, and the less said about that, the better.
O’Neill has already discussed the importance of recruitment after agreeing a permanent stay in Glasgow, with European qualifiers ahead.

Asked by Track Radio about the importance of recruitment for Europe after his permanent appointment: “Absolutely, [recruitment is going to be key]. You’ve nailed it. It’s exactly right.
“We get a two-legged qualification game towards the end of August time.
“The teams that you felt you could definitely beat in, let’s say, early November, you would find really difficult to beat in, let’s say, the second or third week in August, because of the match advantages that they would have over you.
“So yeah, it’s fraught with difficulty in that sense. Celtic failed last year to make it [against Kairat], probably in two games where they would’ve been expecting to go through.
“So I will be concerned, but as you say, excited at the same time that there’s an opportunity for that.”
