Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers could look to add defensive reinforcements before the transfer deadline and has reportedly turned his attention to a United States international.

Earlier this month, the Irishman was still said to be assessing his defensive line after the Bhoys rejected a loan approach from KV Mechelen for Stephen Welsh.

Nevertheless, Celtic are now well down the line in trimming their rearguard options. Yuki Kobayashi has departed for Portimonense on a permanent deal. Meanwhile, Gustaf Lagerbielke is in advanced talks with Heerenveen over a loan switch.

Derby County are also keen on the Sweden international, so there is reason to suggest he could leave the club to make way for potential incomings.

Now, Celtic are believed to have identified a central defender who could come in to help out Cameron Carter-Vickers.

Celtic interested in Sheffield United defender Auston Trusty

According to The Sun, Celtic are interested in Sheffield United defender Auston Trusty just a year after he completed a move to Bramall Lane for £5 million from Arsenal.

The 26-year-old made 34 appearances last campaign for the Blades across all competitions and can also fill in at left-back if needed.

Intriguingly, the outlet even suggest that Mikey Johnston could be used as a makeweight in any potential deal. Nevertheless, Burnley are also courting the Republic of Ireland international. Rodgers has previously admitted his future at Celtic Park is open-ended.

Capped twice by the United States, Trusty is a compatriot of Carter-Vickers, and there may now be potential for the pair to form an alliance at club level.

In 2023/24, the former Birmingham City loanee won 127 duels, 63 aerial duels and made 35 interceptions in the Premier League, illustrating his awareness to danger [Fotmob]. He has also opened his goalscoring account this season against Wrexham in the EFL Cup.

With just over a week left of the transfer window, Celtic look set for a busy period that could involve several incomings before the deadline next Friday.
