Celtic Invincible left in transfer limbo after second-tier side opt against handing lifeline

It must be difficult for any player to leave a club like Celtic to try and find the same success elsewhere.

Celtic are serial winners and have lifted trophy after trophy and are on course to lifting the Scottish Premiership title once again this season with another Treble also a possibility.

Brendan Rodgers knows how to win Trebles as Hoops manager and another man who is familiar with what it takes to do the same is Invincible star Dedryck Boyata.

The big Belgian defender was part of Rodgers’ set-up when they were Invincibles and he played his part in the historic quadruple Treble success at Celtic Park before he would eventually leave.

He would join Hertha Berlin before earning a switch back to his home country with Club Brugge, but that is where things seemingly took a turn for the worst and he suffered with a lack of game time as he moved towards the end of his playing career.

Boyata felt like a “contagious disease” after being told by Brugge staff to train with the kids and he decided to leave the club having last played a minute of football just over a year ago.

Dedryck Boyata will not join Lommel

It was reported this week that second-tier Belgian club Lommel had offered the 34-year-old a contract to get him back on the pitch and playing again.

However 67 Hail Hail can reveal the defender will not be joining Lommel as a free agent this month.

It is understood the former Celtic player did hold discussions with the club – who are part of the City Football Group – but that no deal was struck and that Lommel would not be pursuing his signature.

It is a decision which leaves Boyata in limbo, to an extent, as he considers his next options.

Boyata was back in Glasgow back in November as he was a guest of Celtic’s when they faced off against Brugge in the Champions League.

Boyata Celtic success and stats

The centre-half had his fair share of accomplishments at Parkhead before he departed.

Boyata won eight trophies during his time in the Scottish Premiership and was a big part of Rodgers’ squad in his first stint.

Partnering the likes of Jozo Simunovic, Erik Sviatchenko or Kris Ajer, Boyata showed his talents with some big moments.

That included goals vs Rangers in the league and at Ibrox.

He played, in total, 135 times for Celtic and netted 15 times. And for a centre-back, nine assists was nothing to scoff at either.
